Can the police tow your vehicle for expired tags if you have?
In CA, the only temporary registration is the dealer notice of sale that is to be affixed and visible in the windshield. This allows you to operate the car while the DMV processes the registration. There are also two types of widely used permits, which are really not temporary registrations but permit the vehicle to be operated..temporarily. One that youll commonly see in CA is the red square with the white number in it. This one is good typically for a month or two. It is typically issued to allow for the vehicle to be repaired or smogged so that it can then be registered (typical if you buy a rebuilt or salvaged title car that needs a VIN check, brake and light inspection). The white number indicates the month the permit expires, with the end date written on it. Instructions for placing it (visible) on the front or rear windshield are written on the back of the permit. The other permit is a white One Day moving permit. It allows for moving the car on a particular day for whatever reason while the registration is expired or in a PNO status. In all cases, the notice of dealer sale or temporary permits are required to be visible from outside the vehicle. If it isnt visible, the car may be treated as though it doesnt exist, since in most cases the officer will not be able to confirm the existence of the permit on his computer.
