There are lots of cars on the road with fake temporary tags, at least?
Are you sure theyre all fake? I cant tell. I know what I saw on the temp tags printed by the dealership for: my Silverado my Triumph Sprint my wifes Equinox my wifes Traverse my Triumph Thunderbird my Mazda 6 All of the above were printed at the dealership, by the sales/finance manager. In the case of the Thunderbird, the finance guy guy called me up a few days later, and said theyd transposed two letters in the VIN. They printed me out a corrected tag, and sent a parts runner to my house to give it to me. And all of them were slightly different. They had the required information, the expire date, the VIN, the tag number, the dealership, the sell date, some hash code in the corner that Ive no idea how its computed. But the fonts and layout were a little different in each case. Ive also seen ones that have big blocked sections, where it looks as if the tag number was written in Sharpie. Im told those are ones the DMV prints out when you register a private sale. I suppose if you knew how these all are assembled, or had the right software, you could print up your own. But, like metered postage, Im pretty sure that a fake wont make it past the plate scanners - some checksum wont line up and thats that. Ive -heard- that people print up fake temp tags but I dont know how prevalent the practice is, because I havent heard of many people getting caught.
