How am I able to obtain a temporary tag during this time being that?
The same answer I tell everyone. Check your DMVs website. The rules keep changing. Last February, I got renewal notices for both my drivers license and car registration. Both expired in April. I usually renew my car registration and insurance at the same time at my CSAA (AAA) office, as in California, they do both. One trip, under an hour, and all done. No hassles. And I usually just renew my drivers license on line. So when I finally read the fine print, where it said I had to go into a DMV office and get a new photo, the old one has been used twice already, so it was fifteen years old, as well as a new thumb print and Vision check, and I should make an appointment online for a visit, I sighed, and went online. I was curious if I could do anything up front , save time in the office, but the website firmly informed me that the only thing I could do regarding my drivers license was make an appointment. And I accepted the earliest appointment on April 14th. I was still planning on dropping By the CSAA office to deal with my car at the end of march, because it is really easy at CSAA. But then Checking CSAAs website, I discovered that all their offices were closed for the duration, so I renewed my insurance with a lovely lady over the phone. I use the Yearly renewal visits to review my policy, options, etc. Often saves me a few bucks. And when I went online to renew my cars registration, DMVs Main page had a big banner saying all offices were closed, all appointments cancelled, and all registrations and licenses automatically extended 60 days. I tried to renew my license, and was firmly told that I couldnt. I would have to wait until the offices reopened. And I didnt renew my registration at that time. A bit later, I checked the DMV website again, and a new banner had appeared, stating the rules have changed and try again. I checked, and now I could renew my license online, which I did, along with my vehicle registration. And last week, just checking the website for another Quora answer, the banner stated that offices would start opening on May 8th, that very day. And this week I got both my new license and registration in the mail. The point of this whole tale is that at anytime over the last month or so I would have given you a different answer that was correct for that day, but would be incorrect today. So, check your website. As much as we complain about DMV, they are trying to do the best they can under the circumstances. And making changes at an incredible rate for a government agency.
